No fewer than 13 passengers killed and 98 hurt in rail accident in Mexico.

A deadly train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive opposition criticisms regarding the rapidity and management of the country's flagship public works projects.

The disaster occurred on the trans-isthmus railway, a line built to link the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was created to establish an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving economic development in the area.

“We shall meticulously determine the reasons behind this incident,” stated the national leader.

The leader reported that, of the some 250 individuals on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in critical condition. The official added plans to visit Oaxaca to confer with those impacted.

Major Initiative of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone public works project of the previous administration, whose term finished the previous year. This rail line was a hallmark of his government's strategic agenda for the southern region.

Another massive railway undertaking from that period, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the wider plan to revitalize the economic fortunes of a historically disadvantaged part of the country.

Construction Oversight and Worries

The development of both train projects was managed by the army, marking a notable expansion of its duties in public projects. They were executed at an accelerated rate, beating predictions to be at least partly opened before the end of that administration.

However, this rushed timetable had also raised persistent apprehensions over operational security.

  • Sunday's derailment was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
  • This encompasses an previous collision this month when a train smashed into a truck at a level crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also seen several non-fatal derailments.

Calls for Investigation and Halt

In the wake of the tragedy, the leader of a major opposition party urged an urgent suspension in the development and management of all such projects.

This pause was requested until the completion of a comprehensive safety audit. The party stated that the loss of life "requires prompt explanations."

In response, the president maintained that the train had been functioning in full adherence to all operational standards. Assurances were given that the government would be "accountable" in both the construction and running of these strategic initiatives.
