Individuals Discontinuing Anti-Obesity Injections Gain Back Pounds Four Times Faster Than Dieters

Obesity treatment often requires ongoing approaches.

New research suggests that people who come off new GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover reduced body mass at a significantly accelerated pace than those who stop traditional lifestyle regimens.

Findings released in a leading medical journal points out that while overweight individuals frequently drop a large proportion of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the weight returns at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.

"Individuals buying such treatments must be aware of the risk of quick rebound weight gain when the therapy ends," cautioned lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of recovery implies a return to starting weight within about 18 months.

Comparing Treatments

The research, which looked at 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the results of these new drugs with other pills.

Researchers emphasize that individuals who shed pounds through dieting typically have a more gradual weight regain—around 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.

The Reason for the Quick Rebound

Nutrition scientists suggest the mode of action of the injections is key to understanding the accelerated rebound.

The injections copy a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which helps regulate appetite.

"Long-term administration of the hormone levels several times higher than the body's typical production may cause the body to generate a reduced amount of its own natural GLP-1, and could reduce responsiveness to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.

"Discontinuation of this medication leads to hunger is unsuppressed, making overeating a significant risk."

An Ongoing Condition?

Medical guidelines suggest the jabs for people with weight-linked health risks, accompanied by prescribed diet and exercise modifications.

A number of clinicians say that, given the significant potential of weight regain, the treatment should be considered life-long.

This view is supported by drug manufacturers, who state that the results "emphasize the long-term character of excess weight," comparing it to managing diseases like hypertension.

User Testimonies

People who have discontinued the medication explain a sudden return of appetite.

"It was like something flipping and you become ravenous," recalled a patient.

The struggle is worsened if individuals have not established permanent dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.

Widespread Adoption

Survey data show that millions of people in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the past year, with interest continuing to grow.

  • Adoption is higher among females than males.
  • The middle-aged age group shows the greatest level of interest.
  • Many obtain the medications through private prescriptions rather than public health services.

Ultimately, experts stress that while GLP-1 drugs are effective agents for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone fix and lasting health benefits relies on integrated behavioural changes.
